Enhancing Community Living through Life & Job Skills Programs

There are three aspects to our Community Living Services, currently funded through the Community Living BC.  Click on the links to learn more:

The Life Skills program, better known locally as the "Challengers" (so named by the original participants), is designed for, and by, adults with developmental delays. Staff endeavour to create a variety of opportunities for the Challengers to meet personal goals, abilities, needs and interests.  Some activities include:

  • Sports such as carpet bowling and swimming
  • Arts and Crafts such as woodworking, painting, jewellery making
  • Games such as cards, board games and pool.
  • Social Activities such as restaurant lunches, holiday celebrations, birthday parties, shopping outings, trips to Kamloops
  • Volunteer Work such as the Bike & Sport Shop and the Soup Kettle
  • Summer Trips to broaden horizons, explore other communities, meet new people and have fun!

  • Workshops have been developed for participants that include Street Smarts, Self Defence, Anger Management and Social Skills.
  • Self Advocacy has become an interest of several participants and they travel to Kamloops to meet with others to discuss various important issues that are relevant to their lives, decide on what actions are needed to make the necessary changes, and learn from each other through the process. Staff will also advocate if needed.

The Challengers are actively involved with many community activities and programs

Areas of successful employment include:

  • Forestry Recreation Site Maintenance
  • Window Washing - one person has even started his own window washing business!
  • Bottle Return Depot - the client quickly achieved the ability to work on his own, and the Job Skills Coach simply aided him in gaining the opportunity
  • Clerical Support - at the local Royal Bank and other offices - tasks include: photocopying, paper shredding; counting money, making files, etc.
  • Bus Washing Contract - weekly washing of vehicles for Clearwater & Area Transit
  • Janitorial Work
  • Babysitting
  • Paper recycling
  • Breakfast for Learning - this is a program where two participants hand deliver a healthy breakfast to students at the local elementary school

The Job Skills Coach program was designed to assist adults with developmental delays to find meaningful, paid employment. The Job Skills Coach works with each individual to assess his or her experience and skills, and helps the client prepare for employment in various ways, such as:

  • Time management
  • Transportation issues
  • Taking courses (Food Safe, Babysitting, etc.)
  • How to utilize information and services offered through Clearwater Employment Services
  • How to prepare for job interviews
  • Personal skills (appropriate dress, cleanliness, manners, etc.)

The Job Skills Coach may also accompany and assist the participant, as necessary, until the client and the employer are satisfied that training is complete and the employee has achieved a level of skill, and the confidence necessary to continue on their own.
