Ќwséltkten Place, Yellowhead Community Services Affordable Housing building in Clearwater was completed in August 2019 after more than five years of planning, collaboration and construction. Partners in our efforts to create this facility are the District of Clearwater and Wells Grey Community Forrest.
Ќwséltkten is a Simpcw word meaning family, which is significant as the intent of our affordable housing build was to create a place where relationships are integral to the general purpose of the building. Single people, families, seniors, adults with disabilities and youth gather together, get to know one another and create a variety of neighbourly relationships, establishing a family setting in the broader sense of the word. Using a Simpcw word is a powerful reminder of our location, the important Indigenous history in this large geographical area and the gratitude we feel to be living on the unceded territory of the Simpcw First Nation.
All applicants must meet income level thresholds as established by BC Housing annually. Families are considered to be a minimum of two people (one parent and a child under the age of 19 years). Parents who share custody are still eligible if they have care of their child for at least 40% of the time.
240 Park Drive is a four-storey building with elevator access to all floors, and is made up of a mix of bachelor, one, two and three-bedroom units. Free laundry facilities for residents are provided, many apartments having their own washers and dryers. Each unit has basement storage space, parking and a balcony. To support healthy independent living all units are equipped with an oven, microwave, fridge/freezer and some have a dishwasher. In accordance with building regulations the entire building is hardwired with a fire alarm and sprinkler system.
An outside communal area has been landscaped with a children’s play area and picnic tables. An amenity room creates a shared space for tenant events such as barbeques, pot lucks and meetings. It is important for YCS that this building not only creates quality homes for tenants but also promotes social engagement with a neighbourhood feeling. All YCS properties are no-smoking/vaping.
Due to the central location of the building access to other community services is extremely convenient with medical; schools; grocery shopping; restaurants; retail; dental; Transit; child care; sports and library facilities all being within walking distance.
YCS delivers many programs in the North Thompson Valley and affordable and safe housing fits particularly well with our vision; to create a healthy community where everyone thrives.
